Carmelo Bene and Cinema
Carmelo Bene and cinema were in a special relationship woven by Carmelo Bene’s autobiography. C. B. made his debut in the theater at the age of twenty with Albert Camus Caligula ‘to amortize expenses’ He was born in 1937 and died in 2002. Only in 1968, in ‘indifferent polemic’ with the movement of ’68, he began with the cinema with Nostra Signora dei Turchi.
Today he is forgotten and his books have acquired good market value, for example Works. With the autograph of a portrait, Bompiani, 1995 (about three hundred euros). His new book finally came out in 2019 for the Nave di Teseo, where he dialogues with sport, football, and athletic gesture with Enrico Ghezzi as evidence of the eclecticism of his interests. Carmelo Bene saw more theater in ancient Latin theater and in current sport, while he did not see it at all in his contemporaries. Football was the “gesture in the immediate” that contemporary theater was not. He also hated cinema, of course, before his first of six films: Our Lady of the Turks, Don Giovanni, A Hamlet of Less, Capricci, Salomè, Hermitage. And of his three novels: Nostra signora dei Turchi (the novel), Credito Italiano, ‘l mail de fiori (a long poem actually).
However, we are talking about the ugly part of this story and his missing works: of the cinematographic part all but Nostra Signora dei Turchi have disappeared from the market, while for literary works it has particular value and difficulty in finding works. With The autograph of a portrait, however, being the almost complete collection of all his works is the only source of many works that do not exist individually. Then I write for the ‘case’ Carmelo Bene in Bompiani, asking them in particular about the fact that they have not reprinted this last volume. Bompiani replies to me through Marta from her press office, saying simply that there is no reprint for now scheduled:
“Dear Gabriele,
we do not have reprints in anticipation, I’m sorry.
Best regards,
